Recipients of the Awards of Excellence in Brain Injury Rehabilitation

Bayshore Therapy & Rehab,

Bayshore Therapy & Rehab

Nominated for:

We are humbled and honoured to be nominated for the 2019 Rehabilitation Company of the Year.

Bayshore Therapy & Rehab (BTR) specializes in client-centered, outcome based and innovative community rehabilitation for youths and adults with acquired brain injuries (ABIs) and other serious injuries. The clients we work with have been injured as a result of motor vehicle accidents, work place accidents, slip and falls, sports injuries or illnesses. Our expert team across Ontario consists of Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Speech & Language Pathologists, Rehab Assistants, Kinesiologists and other professionals. The BTR leadership team works closely with therapists and hosts frequent education meetings to share resources, research and best practices to maximize client outcomes in ABI rehabilitation.

BTR is very passionate about client care. In addition to keeping current with research, we look for innovative strategies to provide the best ABI rehabilitation. This past year, BTR was excited to partner with Vox Neuro, a research company at McMaster University who completes functional EEGs. The fEEG identifies specific cognitive impairments, which helps therapists guide treatment programs. As part of this pilot project, BTR developed a cognitive rehab toolbox based on research and best practices, and implemented treatment programs with participants. We were very excited to see improvements when a repeat fEEG was completed! In addition, BTR provides virtual therapy to clients in Northern Ontario and other remote geographies, who might otherwise not have access to rehabilitation. Our goal is to support as many clients as possible to maximize their recovery following an ABI.

BTR is also eager and committed to giving back to the ABI communities we serve. We sponsor several organizations across Ontario including the Ontario Brain Injury Association (OBIA). We support and attend multiple ABI conferences, fundraisers and community events. Our Director Katie Schinkel is President of the Brain Injury Association of Niagara (BIAN) and has assisted with fundraising efforts for the past 3 years. She also volunteered for many years with the Hamilton Brain Injury Association (HBIA). Our Rehab Managers are also very involved with ABI initiatives. Lindsay Mustill sits on the ABI Networking Committee, Patricia Fleet sits on the Brain Injury Association of Windsor Essex County (BIAWE) Conference Committee and Maria Puopolo sits on the Ontario Society of Occupational Therapists (OSOT) Auto-Sector Committee. In addition, the BTR team hosted a garage sale fundraiser for HBIA in 2019 raising $1500 ($1000 with a 50% top up thanks to our Bayshore Foundation)!

Thank you so much to our colleagues who nominated BTR for an award this year. We know there are many deserving companies who do excellent work. We would like to especially thank OBIA and the Personal Injury Alliance (PIA) for providing this opportunity and for your ongoing advocacy in brain injury rehabilitation.
