Tazmeen Lalani

Nominated For: HEALTH CARE PROVIDER OF THE YEAR

Tazmeen (Taz) is a certified Occupational Therapist in good standing with the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario. A 1995 graduate of the University of Toronto, she has completed extensive continuing education in neurorehabilitation and considers herself a lifelong learner, with her greatest lessons coming from her brain injury clients. Taz’s mission is to share the remarkable stories of brain injury survivors through reports, volunteerism, direct advocacy, and testimony.

Since 2004, she has managed her private practice, “Focus on Function,”balancing complex brain injury, insurer, and medico-legal examinations with a full treatment caseload across the lifespan, from toddlers to older adults. Most recently, her testimony before the Ontario Licence Appeal Tribunal was recognized in a decision involving an elderly applicant with post-concussion syndrome: “I found Ms. Lalani, to be particularly credible thorough and believable in her testimony and in her report.” https://canlii.ca/t/km02z.

Taz also finds joy in community service. She has served on the board of the Brain Injury Association of York Region since 2020 and has been President since 2024. She is active locally, including her recent contribution to an educational podcast series on Diverse Abilities. In 2022, Taz joined the Humber College Faculty to teach: OTA Therapeutic Skills: Neurological and Mental Health Conditions. Her continuum of care includes assessing First Nations children, a profound experience that has reshaped her clinical lens by continually prompting her to examine bias in traditional healthcare. Taz’s creativity, respectful advocacy, and holistic approach help her meet the needs of her brain injury clients.

It is Taz’s sincere privilege and honour to be nominated for the Awards of Excellence in Brain Injury Rehabilitation for Health Care Provider of the Year. This recognition reflects the many colleagues, friends/family and clients who have shaped her path over the years.

  • Famida Jiwa says:

Taz is the consummate professional. Her focus is and always has been on her clients and their families. She works tirelessly for them to achieve the best outcome possible. Outside of her regular clients, she works in the local community, volunteering her time and expertise whenever needed and in any capacity. From a personal perspective, she was invaluable to me and my family when we were dealing with the traumatic brain injury of a family member. Even as a healthcare provider, going through something like that can be immobilizing and blurs objectivity. I am so thankful for Taz lending her skillset, empathy and immense generosity to our family. Taz, you have my utmost respect and gratitude. You absolutely deserve this recognition, on behalf of all clients and families, both professionally and in the community – and most likely also on behalf of those you don’t even know you helped!.

    • Tazmeen Lalani says:

Thank you Famida for the beautiful words.
The trust your family showed me in the midst of crisis is humbling.. Brain injury is a journey (as you know well) and you know where to find me when you need support.

  • Claudia Correia Almeida says:

    • Tazmeen Lalani says:

Thank you Claudia for the kind words. I really enjoy our ability to collaborate and problem solve especially on complex paediatric ABI files. It’s a skill to work with kids in rehab and I have learned from your approaches.

  • Meagan Buttle (she/her) says:

    Congratulations, Taz!
It’s wonderful to see your years of work in brain injury rehabilitation and advocacy recognized. I know what a passion project it can be to serve on a board for a brain injury association, the time and energy that goes into that kind of community work matters so much. Wishing you all the best with the nomination!

    • Tazmeen Lalani says:

Thank you Meagan for your kind wishes. It is a joy to support the brain injury community and clients. You and I get to experience many pivotal moments with families and that’s a privilege.

  • Darlene Wailes says:

Congratulations Taz on the nomination. Taz and I have worked closely for many years. I appreciate her insight and compassion into the most complex cases. I have viewed her advocacy for brain injury clients in her conduction of complex catastrophic assessments. Taz has a deep and unique understanding of the clinical and legal parameters which makes her effective in her ability to not only provide opinions but rather give the reader an inside view into the effect of brain injury on daily life. She works collaboratively with a diverse multi-disciplinary team and communicates effectively with respect and kindness. Good luck Taz on this deserved recognition!

    • Tazmeen Lalani says:

Thank you Darlene for the trust as you always patently listen to my many questions:). It is a pleasure to work with you and the staff at NYRC/KRA. We are entrusted with a huge responsibility in assessing catastrophic benefits. The strong collaboration between nero assessors is critical to ensure a fair outcome. I appreciate being part of this skilled group and continue to learn each day.

  • Marek Siekanowicz says:

I first met Tazmin in 2013, when we became members of a multidisciplinary rehabilitation team providing care to a young individual who had sustained a severe traumatic brain injury. From the very beginning, I was deeply impressed by her passion, dedication, and professionalism in working with a highly complex and severely injured client.

What particularly distinguished Tazmin was her ability to look beyond the immediate clinical needs of a patient and anticipate their future rehabilitation requirements. Her extensive experience allowed her to recognize potential challenges early and make thoughtful recommendations that supported the patient’s long-term recovery, independence, and quality of life. I hope you get recognized as the best health care provider of the year!

    • Tazmeen Lalani says:

Marek, I am moved by your comment and where did the time go? I really enjoy our geeky conversations regarding neuroscience and problem solving very complex cases. But overall, you are a passionate practitioner and caring person. Therefore, my contribution in brain injury is only strengthened by people like you. Thank you – if part of the award is to read all the kind words that have been written, then I have already won.

  • Areesa Lalani says:

I have had the privilege of working alongside Tazmeen for the past year and knowing her for much longer, and I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this recognition. She is genuinely one of the most generous, thoughtful, supportive, and ethical people I know. She consistently goes above and beyond for every person she works with, always making sure they feel heard, supported, and valued. Her commitment to the brain injury community extends far beyond her role as a healthcare provider, and she has dedicated her life to volunteering, advocacy, and supporting others. She gives so much of her time and energy without ever expecting recognition in return. She is an exceptional healthcare provider, advocate, mentor, teacher, and volunteer, and I truly cannot think of anyone more deserving for this award.

    • Tazmeen Lalani says:

Thank you Areesa. I know we try and balance being Mom/Daughter and working together. You have always supported my work and volunteer pursuits (BIAYR especially) and for that I thank you as you are also connected to the brain injury community including research. I am happy that you have the opportunity to work with so many talented health providers in a variety of realms including rehabilitation. I see your compassion especially with young clients and their families – that make me truly proud!

  • Khaleel Lalani says:

Congratulations Taz on this well-deserved nomination. I’ve seen firsthand the heart she brings to her work over the years, and her compassion for her clients has never wavered. She goes beyond clinical care, taking the time to truly understand each person’s story and what matters most to them. She brings that same generosity to her volunteering, always finding ways to give back to the community. Whatever she’s doing, she approaches it with the same warmth and care. So proud of her, and this recognition is so well deserved.

    • Tazmeen Lalani says:

Thank you Khaleel. This means a lot coming from you as you have supported me through the years by letting me spend our personal time to volunteer. Tables have turned here as I am the one saying I am proud of you! But I will take it! 🙂

  • Sunil Rocci says:

Taz has my vote without question from a professional and personal point of view. I had the privilege of working with Taz at Humber College as another professor for OTA’s and could not help but notice how well she balanced kindness, firmness and exceptional teaching to her students. I am certain she is this way with her clients based on how enthusiastically she advocates for them whenever we get to generally discuss a case scenario or two. I’m also very aware of the knowledge and commitment she brings to the brain injury community. I have witnessed many examples of her work and advocacy for many years. From a personal perspective, she is equally wonderful as a friend, and was incredibly helpful and supportive when I was dealing with the loss of one parent and then the next. She has an amazing inner character. Taz is a kind and trustworthy person, as an Occupational Therapist, Educator, and simply a wonderful human being. I am proud to be her colleague and friend. She deserves this nomination and I hope she wins this award!

    • Tazmeen Lalani says:

Sunil, I am deeply touched. You trusted me when I asked you (without warning) to come and help run the neuro labs for my course at Humber. College. Despite you not practising solely in neuro, you accepted quickly and made the whole experience exciting for me and the students. Teaching those students about neuro-rehabilitation gave me an opportunity to share my knowledge but I also learned so much in the process. Contributing to this cohort of OTA and PTAs was rewarding.
You have taught me so much about capacity assessments over the years, and that has helped change my lens in how I view situations experienced by client and their family. Thank you for your support as a colleague and friend.

  • Courtney Conti says:

Congratulations on this well deserved nomination Taz! You are a fierce advocate for everyone you support and your determination to provide the highest quality of care is honourable.
I have enjoyed working alongside you for so many years whether that is on a rehab team or our work on the board at BIAYR. Your passion is inspiring, you have such a generous spirit and a big heart. I have learned a lot from you and I look forward to many more years of working and collaborating together.

    • Tazmeen Lalani says:

Thank you so much Courtney. I can write the same about you and that’s a big reason why we enjoy doing great things together! Your addition to BIAYR has been amazing and you give so much of your time to help our members and caregivers. Your positive energy is contagious so like I have said, this nomination isn’t just reflection of me, it’s all the advocates around me that create a powerful force.

  • Sue Cook says:

I have had the privilege of knowing Taz for many years and have tremendous respect for her as an OT. Taz brings a wealth of experience and expertise to her practice along with a commitment to ongoing professional growth. Her work is of consistently high quality and equally important is the care and compassion she brings to her practice. Her client-centred approach ensures that the needs, goals, and well-being of her clients remain at the heart of her work. Her knowledge combined with her non-judgemental approach make her a trusted and valued colleague. Beyond her professional practice, Taz is a dedicated advocate who volunteers her time to support others. This can be seen in her work volunteering on the Board of Directors of the Brain Injury Association of York Region. Taz truly exemplifies the qualities of an exceptional health professional and I am happy to see her recognized by OBIA and PIA Law.

  • Tazmeen Lalani says:

Sue, the respect is absolutely mutual and in fact, I feel very fortunate to have you as a mentor, colleague, and friend. You have trusted me to consult with Abilities while maintaining my practise. I have been adopted into the Abilities family and that means so much to a solo practitioner. I have learned so much from our complex files together and have a deeper understanding of the disparities that face many in northern ontario including First Nations. You have always led your life with kindness and I am grateful for your support.

  • Ellen Lipkus says:

Congratulations Taz on this well deserved nomination. It is such a pleasure working with you on the Board at Brain Injury Association of York Region (BIAYR). You are our fearless leader and I have learned a great deal from you. Your passion, enthusiasm, and commitment to giving your time and expertise make such a difference. I am so glad you are being recognized for your expertise, hard work and dedication.

    • Tazmeen Lalani says:

Thank you Ellen for the kind words – BIAYR is a force for the greater good and your support and commitment is deeply appreciated. Our members/caregivers teach us so much that make us better practitioners/humans. I look forward to collaborating with you on many events and advocacy actions.

  • Rachel Greenwood says:

Taz is truly one of a kind; her knowledge, experience, creativity, and passion collide in the best ways!!

We’ve shared numerous files and Taz’s approach is always client centred, and never prescriptive in nature. She finds what each client loves and hones in. That then becomes the rehab, and that’s how she makes positive changes for everyone she works with. This is especially true with her paediatric clients, but her shine touches clients of all ages.

Working together on the Board of Directors for BIAYR has added another layer to our professional relationship, and beyond that, I’m happy to call Taz my friend. We’re birds of a feather in a lot of ways, with complimentary styles, and an shared love of problem solving the toughest puzzles.

    • Tazmeen Lalani says:

Hello Rachel – thank you – not sure where to start cause your trust in me to collaborate to assist the most complex and beautiful client/families impacted by brain injury is what permits me to apply my skills/passion.
True advocacy is layered and effortful and you never shy away from my suggestion or ideas – in fact, you contribute to the plan and together we have educated many across the insurance/healthcare realm and public about how to support those with brain injury. Brain injury is a fingerprint and I truly enjoy putting those life puzzles together with you.
We met through our volunteer pursuits at BIAYR – which brings happiness to us both and it evolved into a powerful combination to help our very youngest clients and those older. I look forward to our continued work which makes us better healthcare providers, community members and human beings. I think you and I have figured out that if we lead with respect and kindness for all – the rest will fall into place.

  • Sonia Vovan says:

Congratulations, Taz, on this nomination! I have known Taz as a colleague sharing mutual patients, as a fellow board member at the Brain Injury Association of York Region, and as a friend, and each of those vantage points has taught me something.

What stands out first is how she treats people. Her professionalism and kindness are not separate with Taz; they arrive together and are extended to everyone, whether that is a client, a family member, a student, or a colleague. When she speaks, she is eloquent and precise, using that skill on behalf of patients who cannot advocate for themselves. I have watched her do the same for BIAYR, giving her time and her voice to strengthen the supports available to survivors and caregivers in York Region.

She is also someone I look up to as a woman, a leader, and a mother. Taz holds all of those roles with a steadiness that makes it look easier than it is. She has been my sounding board more than once, and her advice on my career and my life has consistently been thoughtful, honest, and generous with her time.

Brain injury care in this province is better because of how Taz practises and how she gives back. She has my vote and my gratitude.

    • Tazmeen Lalani says:

I am truly touched Sonia by your comment/kindness. You are the one that asked me if I wanted to join BIAYR 6 years ago and in that action, you led me to find another source of happiness in helping brain injury survivors and caregivers. I have also watched you evolve professionally and we share the same curiousity and passion about the brain. I am so proud of the academic contribution you continue to bring to the realm of neuro and vestibular rehabilitation. You recognize that each person has their own experience/symptoms and story – and that is the key to restoring quality of life.

  • Ali Jafferjee says:

Thank you Ali. It is my pleasure to work alongside you on BIAYR – your commitment to brain injury both professionally and personally is recognized. Looking forward to many more opportunities to serve the community together.

  • Mary Sue Farache says:

    Congratulations Taz on this nomination.

I am fortunate enough to spend time weekly with Taz as she helps me navigate recovery from an automobile accident last year. She has helped me to find an optimistic outlook through her ongoing support. She is incredibly hard working – but beyond that she shares her knowledge, validation, positivity and emotional encouragement. . She is so generous with her time and energy, and she has helped me to understand the things that are important in all aspects of my ongoing health and physical wellbeing.

There are times in life when one needs an advocate. Taz is this and more for me. I cannot imagine how this year would have progressed without her.

As you go through trauma in your life it makes such a difference to have someone who understands – who assesses your whole situation and works to find solutions that fit your life, including family dynamics and friendship circles. Taz took on my world last year, and she has made it such a better place.

Thank you Taz – this nomination is so deserved. You are one of a kind.

I have been working with Taz for many years now. Tazmeen is a thorough professional and her focus is always on the well-being of her clients and their families and it is a privilege to work with someone who consistently goes above and beyond. She is our go to Occupational therapist for most complex brain injury/catastrophic assessments.

  • Hoong Phang says:

Taz takes a look at every possible angle and solution to help a client / patient through their rehabilitation journey. She is a highly committed and meticulous professional who embodies communication and collaboration with her teammates. Our mutual clients have amazing things to say about her rapport building skills and it truly makes a huge difference when engaging in therapies that are difficult at first, but make the biggest difference in the end. It has been a great experience working alongside Taz.

  • Remy Perry says:

The work that Taz does as a volunteer board member and chair of the Brain Injury Association of York Region shows her commitment to people with needs that extends far beyond what an OT would normally do. As a fellow board member, I have listened to her speak passionately about what needs to be done to improve the system, and I have witnessed the considerable hours of her own time that she has put in to make the lives of others a little better. For her, being a health care provider isn’t just a career. It’s her calling.

  • Michaela Purdon says:

Taz is without a doubt the hardest working and most passionate Occupational Therapist with whom I have had the pleasure to work! She goes above and beyond for her clients, and is a fierce advocate for their safety and needs from an OT point of view and beyond. She is extremely knowledgeable not only in her field, but is an excellent collaborator for her team members to bounce ideas off of! I can think of no one more deserving for this award!
