Since 1988, the Brain Injury Association of Sault Ste. Marie and District (BIASSMD) has been a dedicated source of support, connection and advocacy for individuals and families affected by acquired brain injury throughout Sault Ste. Marie and the surrounding area. Founded by a brain injury survivor, the charitable, non-profit organization was built on an understanding of the challenges that can accompany life after brain injury and the importance of having a community that understands.

BIASSMD provides free services and resources to support survivors, caregivers and families throughout their journeys. Through peer and mentor support, survivor support groups and social opportunities, the Association creates welcoming spaces for individuals to connect, share experiences and reduce isolation. BIASSMD also promotes education and awareness through workshops, presentations and community outreach, while providing information, advocacy and resources to those seeking guidance.

At the heart of BIASSMD is a dedicated community of professionals and volunteers, including survivors, caregivers, family members and supporters, many of whom bring personal experience with acquired brain injury to their work.

For more than three decades, BIASSMD has worked to “make the invisible visible,” helping ensure that people living with brain injury are recognized, included and supported within their communities. Through education, advocacy, connection and compassionate support, the Association continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of survivors and their families.
