Dr. Mariani is honoured to have been nominated for such a well-respected award, humbled to be part of such a distinguished group of co-nominees, and proud to represent Northern Ontario.

Dr. Mariani has been practicing as a fully licenced Clinical Psychologist and Neuropsychologist since 2010, and is the owner and director of Mariani and Associates, a clinic based in Sudbury, Ontario specializing in the provision of psychological services for individuals and their families. In addition, Dr. Mariani holds appointments as Assistant Professor at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, Adjunct Professor in the Psychology Department at Laurentian University, and Affiliate Scientist with Health Sciences North Research Institute, where he enjoys teaching psychology students and psychiatry residents, and conducting research. Dr. Mariani is actively involved in the community with the local chapters of the Ontario Brain Injury Association, the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada, and Parkinson Canada, and is passionate about helping first responders as part of the Advisory Board of the Constable Fabrice Gevaudan Family Fund.

Dr. Mariani’s specialty is the evaluation of neurocognitive, psychological, and behavioural effects of acquired brain injury, including those from traumatic brain injury, brain tumours, dementia, and epilepsy. Dr. Mariani has been in private practice since 2011 where he predominantly works with individuals involved in motor vehicle collisions. He is one of few professionals in the North with a certification to conduct catastrophic examinations by the Canadian Society of Medical Evaluators (CSME) and by the Canadian Academy of Psychologists in Disability Assessment (CAPDA). Dr. Mariani helps individuals with traumatic brain injuries through education, support, and compensatory strategies and often collaborates with other rehabilitation professionals in multidisciplinary teams in order to optimize an individual’s recovery from brain trauma. He also provides evidence-based treatment to individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, and chronic pain.

In terms of his background, Dr. Mariani received his B.Sc. with Specialized Honours in Psychology from York University in 2002, and his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Clinical Neuropsychology from the University of Windsor in 2005 and 2009, respectively. He completed a pre-doctoral residency in Clinical Neuropsychology at the Glenrose Rehabilitation and University of Alberta hospitals in Edmonton, as well as clinical practica at Sunnybrook Health Sciences in Toronto, Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto, University of Windsor Counselling Centre in Windsor, and Wayne State University Health Centre in Detroit.

Dr. Mariani has been living in Sudbury since 2009 and takes pride in being one of few neuropsychologists in the Northeast. From 2009 to 2016, Dr. Mariani was employed at the Northeast Cancer Centre, where he introduced neuropsychological services to the centre and conducted evaluations of behavioural, emotional, and cognitive changes in individuals with brain tumours and breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy and radiation, while working with those who were experiencing grief, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress associated with their diagnoses. He published several peer-reviewed papers on cancer and cognition and has contributed to the Brain Tumour Caregiver Resource Guide and the Colorectal Cancer Well Follow-up Care Guide. From 2015 to 2017, he was employed as Professional Practice Lead in Psychology at Health Sciences North and helped standardize psychological practice at the hospital while driving efforts to advance those services in the community. Finally, Dr. Mariani has been involved in the governance of the profession of psychology at the College of Psychologists of Ontario as a Professional Member of Council, as an Oral Examiner for those completing the licencing process, and as a Proctor for aspiring members completing their Jurisprudence and Ethics Exam.
